Choice is a collaborative work by Jiayu (Jaye) Du and William Yao, drawing together their backgrounds in art, emerging technologies, software engineering, and film directing.

The piece requires two participants to engage in a silent conversation. Each participant can decide what choice to make by pressing the button in front of their side whether to stop the fighting mushroom on their side or vise versa. If they choose to press the button together, and wait, the mushrooms are going to come closer to each other and make a kiss movement.

Jaye and William explore intimate relationships - between lovers, friends, or family members, focusing on how conflict often transforms the other into an imagined adversary. The work reflects on the fragile threshold between opposition and empathy, suggesting that relational positions can shift within a single moment of choice. By stepping outside the immediacy of confrontation and re-examining the relationship itself, tension may dissolve, revealing the possibility of reconciliation.

To love or to become enemies, it’s really just a simple choice.” - as they suggest.
